Later in 2002, the group released their fourth album, Century Child, the first to contain Marco Hietala’s voice and orchestral sounds. In 2001 the first EP was released, Over the Hills and Far Away, containing a cover song by the same name by Gary Moore. Such album was considered the launch of the month by the renowned magazine Rock Hard, ahead of classics like Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi. The third album, Wishmaster, remained for three weeks at the top of the Finnish charts, earning a Gold Disc later. A second demonstrative work was made available later in 1997, and in that same year they signed with the Finnish label Spinefarm Records for the release of the debut Angels Fall First in November of that year, which obtained mixed reviews from the press, unlike the following album, Oceanborn, of 1998, the group ‘s first international success, which was critically acclaimed and popularized during a tour of Europe in 1999. Nightwish released their first work independently in 1996, the Nightwish demo, which also served to show the band’s work to some record labels.
The original line-up featured guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and vocalist Tarja Turunen the group currently has six members, Tarja, his successor Anette, and the first bass player, Sami Vänskä, are no longer involved. The band was formed in 1996 in the city of Kitee by keyboardist and composer Tuomas Holopainen.
